Course description:
This course emphasizes communication and stresses interpersonal relationships in meaningful cultural contexts. To attain this goal, authentic language is brought into the classroom through the voices and faces of dozens of young people, their families and friends. The book used in this class, Discovering French Bleu, provides numerous opportunities for practice in guided communicative activities, which are carefully graded from easiest to more challenging, thus letting the students build up accurate language habits. The course has been designed for pair and small group work so those students can learn together. Finally, students will have frequent opportunities to express their creativity in the language they have learned.

Objectives:
At the end of the first year of study, the student will be able to…
Give personal information about self and family. Greet and introduce people, make and discuss weekend activities, plan meals and shopping/eating in and out. Talk about school and classes. Give and ask date, time and weather conditions. Discuss leisure time and entertainment, sports and health, clothes and accessories, prices and sizes, travel and summer vacation plans.

Students are responsible for the care of the following items:
Discovering French Bleu Nouveau (Textbook, Mc Dougal Littell, Valette ) $ 56
Activity Book Bleu (Workbook, Mc Dougal Littell, Valette ) $ 35

Technology Integration:
Use of Textbook audio tapes/CDs, CD-ROM, lesson videos, language lab, the Internet, transparencies…

Homework;
Homework will be assigned everyday from the textbook or workbook and is expected to be completed for the due date. Any late assignment will be penalized.

Grading:
Student assessment will be conducted in a variety of ways. Parents are encouraged to view entered grades at any time by logging into the parentConnect system via http://chattahoocheepc.fultonschools.org/. Students receive a progress report every 6 weeks and a report card at the end of each semester.
Grading policy is as follows:
90-100 = A Tests/ projects 30%
80-89 = B Quizzes/ dialogues 20%
70-79 = C Homework/Classwork 15%
69 and below = F Class participation 20%
Final exam 15%
Language Lab:
Since listening and speaking are crucial to the learning of a foreign language, there will be weekly lab assignments. Lab participation is mandatory.

Help sessions:
The student is asked to make an appointment with the teacher.

Attendance:
Regular attendance and punctuality in class are vital to the success of any student. Attendance will be taken during every class.

Materials:
Every student in this class is required to bring, every day, their books and notebook. Students are expected to maintain their notebook all year round.

Expectations:
Come to class on time, prepared, and ready to work.
Respect others, the furnishings & equipment in the classroom.
Keep food, drink, and gum away from the classroom.
Raise your hand and wait to be called on to speak.

Make Up Policy:
Students will be allowed to make up work according to the Fulton County/CHS Make up policy (Please review the details of this policy in your student Handbook). Note that, according to the policy,”…students who are present for any portion of the school day are expected to turn in all assignments due on that day in order to receive full credit for that assignment.” Please be reminded that it is the student’s responsibility to find out what was missed and to turn it in on time as well as contacting the teacher regarding any make up work.

Recovery Policy (Fulton County, High School version):
Provision for improving grades:
Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance. Students should contact the teacher concerning recovery opportunities. Teachers are expected to establish a reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed during the semester. All recovery work must be directly related to the course objectives and must be completed ten school days prior to the end of the semester.
Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades.

Chattahoochee High School recovery guidelines:
Recovery is available to students with a cumulative grade below 74% after a minimum of two major grades. The maximum grade a student can earn for a recovery activity is a 70%. There will be only one recovery opportunity per failed major assignment or test. The individual teacher will determine the means of recovery. The student must initiate the process within five days of notification of a failing grade on a major assignment/test.
